Behind every good head of TV hair is someone called a hair designer. And behind the styles of Hannah (Lena Dunham), Marnie (Allison Williams), Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), and Jessa (Jemima Kirk) is Sherry Heart, the lead hair designer for HBO's Girls and Scünci hair expert. "At the beginning of each season, I meet with [costume designer] Jenn Rogien and Lena," says Heart. "They fill me in on what direction the characters are going." As the fourth season comes to an end, we take a walk down hairstyle memory lane.

How has Hannah's hair evolved?"The first season, we were trying to find a fit for her. I put extensions in her hair, but we felt like it was too much hair, so we took them out and trimmed it. At that time, we were doing the characters a lot messier. They were supposed to look like they'd done their hair themselves. Lena came into this season with a bob and bangs. It went well with her character going off to school."

Any plans for Hannah's hair next season? "I saw on Instagram that Lena chopped it all off, but I have no idea how it's going to affect her character. We aren't shooting until early April, so I haven't even gotten in there. Every time her character comes in with a new haircut, you can see that she's changing."

How has Marnie's hair told her story? "She started out very simple and very conservative. She'd try maybe a braid here and there, but we'd never go too far out of her comfort zone. This season, because she's getting into what could possibly end up as a music career, she's trying to do a more polished rock and roll look. She's stepping out. I also think she's one of the characters who can actually do her own hair, except for Shoshanna, who tries a lot."

Speaking of Shoshanna, she toned down her hair considerably this season. "Shoshanna is very adventurous, but she realized this season that she's getting out into the work force and needed to tone it down a bit. A vintage wavy hairdo with hair accessories really speaks to where she is going with her life."

Jessa's long hair hasn't changed much. Does it ever get caught when filming a sex scene?"It does! Before each episode, I talk about the action the character is doing and where the camera is. A lot of times I will pull it all to one side on Jemima [who plays Jessa]. But with long hair there is always going to be a continuity thing. It's hard to have it down and keep it down the same way while filming. My favorite thing to do is secure it back. One of my favorites was her Willie Nelson braids. She had a Wu-Tang shirt on, and we did her braids like Willie Nelson does his—all the way down. We called them the Willie Wu-Tang braids."

How do you keep their hair from looking overly styled? "It's a hands-off approach. You kind of half-ass it when you're styling, but it takes technique to do that because we're taught to make everybody look perfect and nice. So many shows are becoming more real-looking, and the hair is messy, and they want it to be really real. You have to know when to stop."
